Fans of Marvel’s Spider-Man games already know how music is an integral part of the experience. The score, composed by John Paesano, sets the mood and atmosphere of the game, whilst also reflecting the personality and emotions of the characters. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the upcoming sequel to the critically acclaimed PlayStation 5 exclusive, Paesano returns to deliver another masterpiece: the theme song “Greater Together”.

“Greater Together” is a powerful and epic orchestral piece showcasing Paesano’s talent and versatility as a composer. The song was released on 26 June 2023, debuting during a special live performance by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at The Game Awards 10-Year Concert. The theme song is now available for streaming on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and other platforms. The song is also featured in the official trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which was revealed at the PlayStation Showcase 2023 event.

The “Greater Together” theme is inspired by the main protagonists of the game: Peter Parker and Miles Morales, who are both Spider-Man in their own right. The game will allow players to switch between the two heroes, who have different stories and abilities, as they face a new threat from Kraven the Hunter, one of Spider-Man’s most iconic villains.

It is clear how Paesano wants to create a theme capturing the essence of both Spider-Men, as well as their relationship and teamwork. In this way, it is evident how he used different instruments and motifs to represent each character, such as brass for Peter and strings for Miles. He also blended elements from their previous themes, such as Peter’s heroic fanfare and Miles’ hip-hop beats.

The result is a stunning musical fusion reflecting the diversity and unity of the web-slinging duo. “Greater Together” starts with a soft piano melody building up to a soaring chorus, featuring a melodic choir. The chorus is followed by a dynamic section alternating between Peter’s and Miles’ themes, highlighting their individual strengths and styles. The song then reaches a climactic finale, where both themes merge into one harmonious melody, symbolising their partnership and friendship, before devolving into something far more sinister… and perhaps something more?

Paesano is no stranger to the Marvel universe, having composed for two Netflix series: Daredevil and The Defenders. He is also known for his work on the Maze Runner film series, Detroit Become Human, and of course, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. He has received numerous accolades for his music, including an Emmy nomination and a BAFTA award.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to release on 20 October 2023, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The game promises to deliver an exciting and immersive adventure taking players to new heights of web-swinging action. With Paesano’s theme song as the soundtrack, fans can expect to feel the thrill and emotion of being Spider-Man like never before.
