Apex Legends, the fast-paced battle-royale game from Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment, continues to enjoy a healthy and growing player base since being shadow dropped in February 2019. With its unique blend of hero-based gameplay and intense combat, it has captivated millions of players worldwide. However, as with many popular online games, this battle-royale is not without its challenges. One of the most significant issues plaguing the game is the prevalence of Apex Legends cheaters.

Cheating in online games is not a new phenomenon, but the impact it has on the player experience cannot be overstated. In Apex Legends, cheaters use various hacks and exploits to gain an unfair advantage over other players. This is especially true when one considers how even the ranked mode in the game has been impacted; to the point where some of the highest ranking players are almost all cheaters. This immediately casts doubt on the prestige, effort and skill required to compete with the ‘best’ players the game has to offer. After all, if the skill pool is continuously diluted with cheaters, why bother with even trying without “enhancements”?

The good news is Respawn has taken several steps to address the issue of Apex Legends cheaters. They have increased the frequency of ban waves, specifically targeting accounts that have been identified as using cheats. Additionally, they have implemented more sophisticated detection methods to identify cheaters more effectively.

One of the most promising developments in the fight against cheaters is the introduction of machine learning algorithms to detect suspicious behaviour. These algorithms analyse player data to identify patterns indicative of cheating. By using this technology, the studio can more accurately identify and ban cheaters, reducing the impact they have on the game. These efforts have resulted in the banning of thousands of accounts, but the battle is far from over.

As new cheats and exploits are developed, Respawn must continually adapt and update their anti-cheat measures to stay ahead of the curve. This cat-and-mouse game between developers and cheaters is a constant challenge, but it is one the developers are committed to winning. Of course, even the most sophisticated of methods are not full proof and this is where the player-base must come in to assist – especially if anyone has hopes of the game curbing this problem.

Multiplayer online games are only as good as their communities. To assist with combatting Apex Legends cheaters, the developers have built tools right into the game to allow the community to play a crucial role in combating this very real issue. Players are encouraged to report suspicious behaviour, providing valuable information that can help Respawn identify and ban cheaters. By working together, the community and developers can create a more fair and enjoyable gaming experience for everyone. There is still hope for this immensely popular and exciting battle-royale game, but the road to a ‘cheat-free-Apex’ destination will be a long one.
