Rockstar Games has recently released the much-anticipated GTA VI trailer (Grand Theft Auto VI)! The game, set to be released in 2025 (yes, the wait continues), is expected to be a massive hit, with predictions of billions of dollars in sales to be generated by the latest release in the long running franchise.

The release of the GTA VI trailer is particularly significant as it has been over a decade since the release of its predecessor and coincides with Rockstar Games’ 25th anniversary. Notably, the trailer was released earlier than planned due to a leak on social media, which included low-quality footage.

The GTA VI trailer showcases how the franchise is returning to Vice City, a much beloved gaming locale that fans have been yearning to return to. The game will also feature the franchise’s first female protagonist named Lucia, an ex-convict. The trailer offers an enthralling glimpse into the game’s next chapter, with some highlights including:

  • New Hair Physics: The trailer introduces new protagonists, Lucia and Jason, alongside a host of unique characters. A standout feature is the advanced hair physics, adding realism to scenes like Lucia joyriding in an open-top car, her hair interacting beautifully with the environment. This innovation hints at the extensive character customisation options GTA is known for.

  • Social Media Integration: Reflecting modern trends, social media appears to play a significant role in GTA VI. The trailer showcases this through a series of short video clips, reminiscent of platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts. This feature is exemplified by characters hosting a livestream on an in-game social media platform during a car meet. Who knows how this feature will play into the narrative, but it could provide some interesting content (GTA has always been known for going above an beyond in terms of in-game world content).
  • Rich Wildlife and Scenery: The game’s world brims with life, featuring a diverse array of animals and birds. The trailer shows scenes like flamingos in a swamp and a crocodile entering a store, enriching the immersive experience of the game’s setting in Vice City. It is also entirely possible Rockstar have used some assets and artificial intelligence from Red Dead Redemption 2, to make the animals and non-playable characters even more believable.
  • Detailed NPC Animations: The NPCs (non-player characters) in GTA VI display significantly more detail than previous entries. Fluid animations, as seen in a scene where a female character poses for a photo, and of another twerking on a car, contribute to the game’s lifelike environment. It goes without saying how advances in NPC animation will most likely be the key driving force behind the sixth entry in the franchise.

  • Superior Sky and Weather Graphics: The trailer boasts phenomenal graphics, from realistic skyboxes to detailed environmental effects. So much so, there are moments encroaching the uncanny valley in the trailer. Is it a game, it is real-life? This is obviously what Rockstar wants to achieve. The GTA VI trailer also offers glimpses of Vice City by day and night, as well as during different weather conditions like rain, showcasing just how far Rockstar’s in house game engine has come.

These elements, combined with the anticipation surrounding GTA VI, create a palpable excitement for what promises to be an exceptional addition to the franchise. Rather ironically, the world GTA VI satirises is living up to expectations, where the excitement has lead to certain “fans” leaking content for the game early. In this sense, fans need to consider the impact of leaks in the gaming industry as they ultimately do more harm than good and should be frowned upon.

The premature release of the GTA VI trailer, spurred by leaks, has a cascading effect. They disrupt marketing strategies, potentially leading to project cancellations, and may very much negatively impact the morale of the development teams – who have spent years putting everything together. As such, supporting leaks undermines the hard work and creativity poured into these projects. Therefore, the gaming community should actively discourage the propagation of leaked content to preserve the integrity and excitement of official game releases. Doing so allows gamers to enjoy the content as intended, and to celebrate alongside the developers. Let us all be better, together.
