Tenacious D, the legendary rock duo composed of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, is back with a new song celebrating their love for all things video games. Aptly titled “Video Games”, the song is a catchy and humorous tribute to some of the most popular titles in gaming history, including the likes of God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Fallout 4, and quite a few more.

The song was released on May 11th, 2023, along with an animated music video featuring Tenacious D as Pixar-like characters in various gaming scenarios. The video was created by Oneyplays and directed by Adam Paloian and Chris “Oney” O’Neill. For the most part, it is a visual treat for gamers, as it references and parodies many iconic moments and characters from different genres and franchises.

The lyrics of the song are equally hilarious and clever, as Jack Black sings about how ‘he doesn’t play video games… except for the ones that he does’. He also praises the storytelling and immersive qualities of many modern titles, whilst Kyle Gass provides some witty commentary and backup vocals. The song is a testament to Tenacious D’s musical talent and comedic flair, as well as their genuine appreciation for video games as an art form. Simply put, fans of group and video games alike will likely enjoy this rocking ode to gaming culture.

Interestingly, “Video Games” is the first new song from Tenacious D since their 2018 album Post-Apocalypto, and is hot off the heels of Black’s recent “Peaches Peaches Peaches” for the Super Mario Brothers movie. Perhaps this is a taste of what may come in a future album? Either way, the song is now available on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, and can also be watched on YouTube (video embedded above).
